Nightbreak

In 1918, at a USDA research farm, a tobacco variety called Maryland Mammoth stopped flowering each summer and just kept growing, tall and leafless of blooms, while cuttings from the same plant, potted and carried indoors for winter, flowered right on schedule. W. W. Garner and H. A. Allard tested soil, water, and temperature before trying the one variable they hadn't: how much light the plant got each day. That was it. In a series of experiments published in 1920 (“Effect of the Relative Length of Day and Night on Plant Growth,” Journal of Agricultural Research), they showed the plant would flower once its daily light period fell under about 14 hours — regardless of the season or the temperature. The paper that gave the effect its name: photoperiodism.

A sharper finding followed from the same kind of plant. Splitting an otherwise-long night with a few minutes of ordinary light, in the exact middle of it, was enough to block flowering entirely — even though the total dark hours barely changed. The plant wasn't totaling darkness. It was reading the longest unbroken stretch of it, sensed through a light-switched pigment called phytochrome that flips between two forms depending on the light it last saw. Break the night, and, as far as the plant's own clock is concerned, night never really happened.

Two simplifications, named rather than hidden. First, the bar uses the plain geometric sunrise/sunset formula — no atmospheric refraction, no equation of time, no elevation — so a real sunrise or sunset can differ from what's shown here by several minutes, more at higher latitudes. Second, a “longest unbroken stretch” of exactly half the night assumes one flash landing at the true midpoint; real night-break experiments varied the timing, and a real plant's own critical night length is species- and cultivar-specific — Maryland Mammoth's own threshold was its own number, not a universal one every short-day plant shares. This page shows the sky's real geometry and the shape of the mechanism Garner and Allard found, not a working model of any one plant's actual clock.
