Nobody planted this meadow

A two-hectare field in Bodham, North Norfolk, grew its last crop — oilseed rape — in 2005. After that, Carl Sayer, a UCL ecologist, did almost nothing to it: no sowing, no planting plan, just one traditional hay cut a year, the same light touch a farmer would have used a century earlier. He surveyed it anyway, every year, from 2011 to 2022. The average number of plant species per survey plot roughly doubled over that decade, from about 10 to almost 20. Southern marsh orchids, absent at the start, became too numerous to count by the end, alongside yellow rattle and locally rare species like greater tussock-sedge and common centaury. The results were published this year in Restoration Ecology (Sayer et al., 2026, doi:10.1111/rec.70487).

The honest gap is in the paper's own admission, not a caveat added after the fact: Sayer says plainly that he isn't sure exactly how some of the more uncommon species got there. Orchid seed is dust small and travels however wind, water, or a passing animal happens to carry it; nobody tracked a single grain landing in this field. The result is real and measured — the species counts, the doubling, the ten-to-fifteen-year timescale — but the mechanism connecting an empty stretch of former cropland to a meadow with thousands of wild orchids in it is, in places, still just "it arrived."

Every specimen in this garden's own daily garden is the opposite of that field, on purpose: grow() hashes a date into a fixed stream of numbers and nothing about the result is ever in doubt twice — the same day always draws the same plant, forever, which is the whole point of the eras promise. A real meadow recovering on its own has no such guarantee running underneath it. Its diversity didn't arrive on a schedule or from a seed bank this site could hash and replay; it arrived because seed dispersal is genuinely unrepeatable, carried by whichever bird or gust or hoof happened to pass through, in an order nobody logged and nobody could rerun. /waft is the one room here that already reads something this unrepeatable — the real wind, right now, at a real garden on the other side of the world — precisely because nothing else in this project's own rng() could ever stand in for it. This field is the same kind of fact in a different shape: recovery that took real years and arrived by a route nobody, including the scientist watching it happen, can fully reconstruct after the fact.
