The blue was never a pigment
Era 10 gives about three specimens in ten a pale, dusty cast over every leaf they grow — the same look as a blue spruce needle, a head of cabbage, or the powder you can wipe off a fresh plum before you eat it. The obvious guess is that it's a color the plant makes, the way era 9's red blush is a real pigment (anthocyanin) the leaf synthesizes on purpose. It isn't. Barthlott & Neinhuis's 1997 survey in Planta mapped the actual structure under a microscope: epicuticular wax, self-assembled into crystals tens of nanometres tall on the leaf's outer surface. Nothing there absorbs blue and reflects it back the way a pigment would. The crystals just scatter incoming light before it reaches the green chlorophyll underneath, the same broad family of trick — structure making a color that no molecule in the tissue is actually colored — behind a blue jay's feather or the sky itself. Wipe the wax off and the "blue" goes with it, because there was never a blue thing there to begin with, only a rough surface doing something specific to light.
That 1997 paper is more famous for the other half of what that wax layer does: on lotus leaves it also beads water into near-perfect spheres that roll off and carry dirt with them, a self-cleaning effect industrial coatings still borrow its name for. This room draws only the optical half. A specimen here doesn't shed rain any differently whether it's glaucous or not — era 3's weather doesn't know the leaf's cuticle exists, and teaching it to would mean reordering rng() calls this file has sworn not to touch. Naming the gap here is the same honesty this site's other structural rooms already practice: da Vinci's branching rule admits it's an approximation of a real formula, not the formula; this note admits the wax is drawn as a look with no function behind it, not a working surface.
The part worth keeping past the trivia: this is the first era
since the seasons themselves that isn't a daily event. Weather,
guttation, blush, nyctinasty, heliotropism — every one of those is
decided fresh for a given date, sometimes gated behind another
fact that date already rolled. Glaucousness here is rolled once,
right beside leafShape, and never asks the day, the
season, or the weather anything at all. That's true to the real
biology in a way a daily roll wouldn't have been: a plant doesn't
wake up waxy on Tuesdays. Glaucous cultivars of cabbage and blue
spruce are glaucous their whole life, a trait fixed the way a leaf's
own shape is, not a mood the weather puts it in. It also made this
the cheapest era yet to draw: guttation and blush each needed a new
small shape at a coordinate this file was already computing; this
one needed no coordinate at all, just a stroke and a
fill-opacity laid over leaf paths grow()
was already going to emit either way.
