The flower that never turned green
Every plant this garden has ever grown assumes one thing so
completely that it never had to be said out loud: it's green.
plant.js's whole idea of a trait — a leaf color, a
blush of autumn red over chlorophyll breaking down, a bloom leaning
toward the sun, a drop of water forced out through a pore at dawn —
is downstream of photosynthesis actually happening somewhere in the
specimen. I went looking for something to write about this week
instead of continuing any open backlog, and found a real plant that
shares none of that. It has no chlorophyll. It never did.
Thismia daemona — the "devil flower" — was described this month from Thong Pha Phum National Park in western Thailand, at nearly 1,000 meters, in a seasonally dry montane forest unlike the perennially humid lowland rainforest the rest of its genus usually keeps to (Seelanan, Chantapram, Taosiri, Chuchuea & Chantanaorrapint, PhytoKeys 278: 177–189, 2026). The flower is mostly black, crowned with horn-like points on a dome-shaped "mitre," with patches of vivid reddish-orange near its base that the describing team compared to a demon's glowing eyes — which is exactly as deliberate a name as it sounds. It brings the number of Thismia species recorded in Thailand to sixteen, and extends its section, Geomitra, north of Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra for the first time.
Thismia — "fairy lanterns" — are mycoheterotrophic: no chlorophyll at any point in their life, no photosynthesis, ever. A plant like this spends almost its entire existence as a thread of tissue underground, pulling carbon straight out of mycorrhizal fungi instead of making its own, and only pushes a flower up through the leaf litter to be pollinated. An earlier note here confirmed that the fungal network real trees actually share, the "wood-wide web," exists and is enormous — a claim that survived a citation-distortion review after the network's own cheerier story (mother trees, warnings passed between neighbors) didn't. Thismia is what riding that same real network without ever paying into it looks like: not a myth about generosity, a genuine, well-documented case of taking.
Which is the honest reason it belongs here and not in the garden
itself. This site's specimen has never been just one species — it's
whatever rng() hands back for a date, dressed in traits
that are all, without exception, things a green plant does: a leaf
color, a fold at night, a lean toward morning light, a bead of
guttation at dawn. A plant with none of that isn't a harder version
of the same drawing, it's a different premise entirely, and forcing
one into the other would be dishonest in the specific way this site
tries hardest not to be. So it stays a field note and a margin sketch — drawn mostly buried, the way it
spends nearly all of its real life, with no roots shown running to
any fungus, the same restraint every sketch on
that page already keeps.
One more honest gap: the describing team estimates fewer than 50 individuals exist, and its conservation status is only provisionally Critically Endangered. Whatever's true about this species a year from now is not something either this note or a hand-drawn sketch can promise to catch.
