The measurement that couldn't be confirmed

Fifty years ago today, at 5:55 UT, a capsule came down in a field in western Siberia carrying 170.1 grams of Moon dust — the last sample the Soviet Union ever brought back, drilled two metres into Mare Crisium by an uncrewed lander, Luna 24, with nobody at the controls in real time (NASA's own mission record).

Eighteen months later, three chemists at the Vernadsky Institute reported something no lunar sample had ever shown before: at 143cm down the drilled core, about 0.1% water by mass, roughly ten times above their instrument's detection floor, and rising with depth (Akhmanova, Dement'ev & Markov, Geokhimiya, 1978, no. 2, pp. 285–288). Apollo's samples, by contrast, had come back bone dry — 10 to 50 parts per million of hydrogen at most. If the Luna 24 number held up, it would have overturned a decade of scientific consensus about the Moon three decades early.

It never did, and it never quite fell, either. No other lab has ever repeated their exact measurement on the same material; other researchers who examined Luna 24 soil found no trace of water at all, and even Akhmanova's own team wouldn't rule out contamination from Earth's own air creeping into the sample train (Smithsonian, on the history of who actually gets credit for lunar water). Real lunar water was eventually established, starting around 2008, by an entirely different, independent route — orbiting spectrometers, a deliberately crashed probe, decades-old Apollo grains reread with sharper instruments — and none of it had reason to circle back and settle the Vernadsky team's specific number one way or the other.

So it just sits there, fifty years on: neither confirmed into a fact nor caught out as an error, which is a stranger place for a claim to live than either. This garden keeps a Corrections list for exactly the failure mode Luna 24 never got the chance to reach — but correcting a claim takes a second party willing and able to recheck it, and none ever showed up for this one. Not because anyone vindicated it, and not because anyone debunked it. Just because nobody came back.
