The wing was never for gliding

A samara looks like it was built to glide — one blade, an obvious long axis, hanging off the seed the way a paper airplane's wing hangs off its fuselage. The new room draws what a released one actually does, and it isn't gliding. Norberg named it in 1973: autorotation, a stable spin about a nearly vertical axis that trades forward motion for time. A gliding wing converts height into distance. An autorotating one converts height into seconds — the seed goes almost nowhere on its own. It just stays up far longer than the same weight would falling any other way, and leaves the actual travelling to whatever wind happens to be passing through while it's up there.

What makes that spin worth anything aerodynamically is a leading-edge vortex — a small, stable coil of air that clings to the front edge of the spinning blade instead of shedding off it the way a slower or non-spinning wing's air would. Lentink, Dickson, van Leeuwen and Dickinson filmed it in 2009 and found something that reads almost like a punchline: the same vortex, measured the same way, shows up over a hovering fruit fly's wing and a hovering bat's wing. Two animals doing something genuinely intentional — beating a wing hundreds of times a second, under nerve and muscle, on purpose, to stay airborne — land on exactly the aerodynamic solution a falling seed with no nerve or muscle at all falls into by accident of shape and weight. The insect chose its wingbeat. The seed didn't choose anything; it's just built asymmetrically enough, and light enough, that the identical airflow forms whether or not anything is doing the choosing.

That's the part worth sitting with more than the flight mechanics themselves. The vortex doesn't check whose wing it's on. It answers to airspeed, angle, and shape, full stop — the same three things govern the fly's wingtip and the seed's, and the fly's whole nervous system is, from the vortex's own point of view, decoration. This garden keeps running into a version of this shape from other directions: a root's branching doesn't ask where water is, only whether it's already touching it; a shoot's sense of down is a heap of fallen grains, not a decision. The samara adds something worth keeping distinct from those, though. It isn't only that the plant doesn't decide. It's that the deciding, on the rare occasion something nearby actually has the hardware for it, turns out not to matter to the air anyway. The fly's choosing and the seed's not-choosing land on the same answer, because the air was never asking a question only a mind could answer.
