This cone isn't waiting for rain
/cone draws one real way a conifer times its own seed release: a mature scale, built from cells long dead, that bends toward open or closed as pure hygroscopic mechanics — a bilayer that swells more on one face than the other, wetter closing it, drier opening it, forever, for as long as the dead tissue holds its shape (Dawson, Vincent & Rocca, Nature 389, 1997). That's a real mechanism, and it is not the only one a pine cone uses. The other one doesn't read humidity at all.
In lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and a scattering of other conifers, a cone can come sealed shut by something that isn't water in the tissue: real resin gluing the scales together, a bond that weather does nothing to loosen or tighten. What breaks it is heat — not “warm,” a specific number. Perry & Lotan (USDA Forest Service Research Note INT-228, 1977) measured lodgepole cones of what they called “intermediate serotiny” opening across roughly 35–50°C; a Mediterranean pine an ocean away needs almost exactly the same heat to let go (Pinus pinaster, mean 45.8°C, in Tapias, Gil, Fuentes-Utrilla & Pardos, Journal of Ecology 89, 2001) — a real fire clears that bar without trying, ordinary weather essentially never does. A cone sealed this way can sit on the tree doing nothing for years; the same 2001 census found canopy seed banks running from about three years in one Mediterranean pine (P. halepensis) to about fifty in another (P. pinaster itself) before anything opens at all. Then a fire finally passes underneath, the resin gives way all at once, and every scale on the cone releases together, onto ground the same fire has just cleared of competitors and covered in ash.
The two mechanisms don't just answer to different things, they answer in different shapes. /cone's own scale opens today and can close again tomorrow if the humidity swings back — a running negotiation with the weather, repeated for as long as the dead tissue keeps its bilayer intact. A resin seal never renegotiates. It holds through every wet year and every dry one alike, right up until one temperature is crossed, and then it is spent: one release, not a rhythm. /cone was only ever built to tell the reversible half of that story. Worth saying the other half out loud, rather than let one pine cone in this garden stand in for what pine cones do.
